Being a wedding and engagement photographer in Denver means taking all the Colorado weather as it comes. It’s often completely unpredictable with a mind of its own, no matter what the weather forecast is. The hours leading up to this shoot, Caitlyn and I were texting back and forth thinking through other options for our session because the forecast was showing some nasty weather. Last minute, we decided to stick with our original plan and head up to the mountains to hopefully miss the storm.
Man, did that storm hold some beauty for us. We stopped and watched in awe throughout their session as the sky went from dark clouds with some sun peaking over the mountains, to full blown orange skies, to a gorgeous double rainbow, to full sunshine with some sprinkles of rain. It was a crazy whirlwind to witness and I think we all just felt so thankful for the way Colorado showed up for us.
Caitlyn and Josh fully embraced the moment and it was so telling of their relationship – steady through the storms & sunshine of life. Capturing that was an honor.
Here are some tips from a Denver engagement photographer after this wild adventure session
Check not only the weather leading up to your session, but if you’re shooting at any parks in Colorado I’d highly recommend checking the park websites! To list a few, check out Rocky Mountain National Park, Garden of the Gods, the Red Rocks, Estes Park, the Great Sand Dunes, and too many more to list. Colorado is not lacking in gorgeous landscapes with a variety of climates and views.
As hard as it can be, go with the flow and trust your photographer! In this one session alone we had to pivot as the weather changed! We had rain, clouds, and sunshine in one hour! Caitlyn and Josh really had to trust me – how I was posing them, that they looked okay even when it was raining, and more. It actually helps to capture you in all your authenticity!
With the unpredictable weather, I highly recommend bringing two or more outfits to your session so that you can be as prepared as possible! Planning one outfit can be overwhelming, never mind multiple. To help out all my incredible couples and others, I’ve created an outfit inspiration Pinterest board – check it out, and enjoy!
